How to select the right nozzle for a laser cutting head: diameter, type, and compatibility

nozzle for a laser cutting head

A nozzle is one of the most frequently replaced consumable components in a laser cutting head. Selecting the right nozzle directly affects cut-edge quality, gas consumption, and process stability. Below, we explain the key factors to consider when choosing a nozzle.

Nozzle Orifice Diameter

The nozzle diameter determines the flow of assist gas and should be matched to the thickness of the material being cut:

  • 1.0–1.5 mm — thin sheet metal (up to approximately 3 mm), nitrogen cutting
  • 2.0–3.0 mm — medium-thickness materials
  • 3.5–4.0 mm and larger — thick materials, oxygen cutting

A nozzle that is too small restricts gas flow and reduces the efficiency of molten material removal. A nozzle that is too large increases gas consumption and may reduce cutting precision.

Single-Layer or Double-Layer Nozzle?

Single-layer nozzles are commonly used for thin materials and nitrogen cutting, where a clean, narrow kerf and high edge quality are required.

Double-layer nozzles (featuring an additional gas channel) provide a more stable gas flow when cutting thicker materials and are often preferred for oxygen-assisted cutting applications.

Cutting Head Compatibility

Laser nozzles are not universal. The thread type and geometry must match the specific cutting head being used.

Our range includes nozzles compatible with Raytools cutting heads (including M11-thread models), as well as Precitec and WSX systems. If you are unsure which nozzle is suitable for your machine, simply provide the cutting head model and we will help you select the correct part.

When Should a Nozzle Be Replaced?

A nozzle should be replaced if you notice:

  • Deterioration in cut-edge quality
  • Uneven or asymmetric gas flow
  • Spatter marks or damage on the nozzle face
  • Deformation or damage to the nozzle orifice

Regular nozzle replacement is one of the most cost-effective ways to maintain consistent cutting performance and high-quality results.
